Tonight marks the one week anniversary of the Shawnee, KS fire.
Message from CJ
I got to hang out with CJ for a bit last night - he felt well enough to rub against my hand and ask for a few scritches (which I very carefully gave)!
He's doing better every day.
Some things tend to startle him now - and may always do so:
- We had an intense storm with high winds, too much like the howling winds the night of the fire
- He used to love the warmth of clothes out of the dryer - but warmth feels too much like fire right now
But he's a sweet, brave boy, and with the gentle care & love of mom Kathi, this boy's gonna be okay.
While I was there, CJ gave me a message to pass along to you:
"Hi, CJ here. I don't look like my handsome self yet but I'm getting there.
I don't like the white stuff mom keeps putting on me so I keep rubbing it off. And the pink stuff tastes nasty so I try to spit it out but end up swallowing most of it.
I'm using the kitty box now but not covering up when done as it hurts my paws. I'm purring and rolling over for belly rubs.
I like not having to fight for my food but I miss my older buddy Cosmo."
Thankful Thursday
As we reach this first milestone, one week into rebuilding:
We are thankful for...
- friends, who made it out alive
- a veterinarian who was at the right place at the right time to save one special kitty's life
- the support of countless people, both financially & emotionally
- the power of social media to rally total strangers around a need
- an amazing shelter with staff and volunteers willing to drop everything to assist
What are you thankful for?

Thank you for the message from CJ. Although I did not know CJ or Kathi prior to the fire, I feel like they are now part of my extended family.
I am grateful for:
1)Amy, Sebastian & Dottie getting out safely,
2)CJ being found and
3)A good friend who keeps all their online friends well-informed as they begin to rebuild their lives.
Awww CJ, it's so nice to see you looking quite well actually for all you have been through. Probably some noises will be scary for a long time - maybe forever. We are so very thankful that you got out of the fire with your life and that your mom is okay too and Seabasscat and his family.
I'll go along with what Vicki said! It goes double for me. xoxo Thank you for the updates. "Hi" to Allie!
Those are great things to be thankful for....we think CJ is looking better already and know he will be fine in no time. Thanks for the update.....
I'm so glad to hear that CJ is feeling better. It will take a while, I'm sure, but he's obviously on the road to recovery. Please tell him that lots & lots of cats are thinking of him, and wishing him well, every day... and so are their peeps.
Looking better already! We are thankful you are better. xoxo
I am very thankful that CJ is getting better! Purrs to him and Kathi, and to Amy, Lee, Sebastian and Dottie, of course!

Things Mum and I are thankful for * clears throat and refers to notes *
.. We have a home and a roof over our heads many do not. Hang in there CJ a home will come as cool or as warm as you like.
.. We have friends. I hope we never have to find out like you did, but I hope they would be there for us.
..We can read about how you are doing thanks to Ryker and his Mum. Without their updates we would be in a much worse place - worry worry worry.
--CJ - we re thankful for CJ and the vet who helped. I hope they find that veterinarian - so very many people want to thank them for saving one life. Such a good looking boy is going to get better says my sisfur Sienna the Tortie Kitten Cat.
.. Mum and I mourn Cosmo, alongside CJ and his family. We are thankful for their safety but are wretched at his loss.
Wasn't it wonderful that the vet was right there on site to save CJ? Happy thoughts to dwell on!

CJ, you have been through so much. We are purring very hard for you and hope you make a full recovery.
We are thankful that Sebastian and CJ, Dottie and their humans are safe this week. We are thankful that we have enough of everything we need and have some left over to share with others. We are thankful that we have each other. Thank you for asking!

He looks soooooo beautiful! Even in his ever-so-slightly scorched & scruffy state, he has the kind of come-hither bedroom eyes that could be stiff competition for the King.
Even so, I am purraying for him to feel better and better efurryday.
We is very sorry about his brofur, but we will ask Mr. Teeth and Clarkie to go buddy up to him and show him around the other side of the Bridge. They was real good boys and they'll take care of him.
Jut had to come back and say :0
CJ ROCKS - KATHI ROCKS !!!!! We love them both and want them to know they will be looked after! They have friends they have never met!
Good to hear that you are geting better. You will be your beautiful self again soon. Hugs
CJ, you are precious and special beyond words. Thank you for your update. We are purring for you, you brave little Mancat and sending you lots of love.
We are new friends, so glad CJ is improving. If the litter bothers his paws, he might do OK with shredded paper instead.
awww, thanks Dash Kitten! Tell your mum we're very thankful for you two, too!
We'll tell CJ that Sienna thinks he's good looking :-)
Our Mommy thought so too, Spitty. VERY expressive eyes! Please tell Mr. Teeth & Clarkie thank you for looking after Cosmo!!
HI Bijntje! *waves paws madly* Thanks for saying hello to CJ!
Great idea, Simba - we'll pass it along to mom Kathi! And *hugs* to new friends!
So good to read the update. We are new friends too, but feel like they are part of the family. CJ and Kathi are fighters and we admire their spirit.
Sending lots of purrs,
Katie & Glogirly
