Friday's Fashion Faux Paws +1

Allie: The Fashionable Feline always knows to face into the light during a photo shoot for optimal effectiveness.

We'll give pointers on the Dreamy Faraway Stare in another episode.

Speaking of Fashionable ...

Cocktails and Coloring are two things that get four paws WAY up from our Fashionista.
Those are the subjects of the newest series our mom is working on,
and Episode 1 launched on our squeaky new entertainment channel yesterday!

She'd love to know what you think of it!

Oh, and #teamPita all the way (even though she's a doggie smaller than Faraday!)

National Grey Day + World Redhead Day

In honor of National Grey Day, we present to you one stunning Grey moggy ready to celebrate in his new forever home. Any takers?

"Hello there, my name is Shadow. My mom was recently put in a nursing home and couldn't take me with her so now ... here I am.

I am an indoor cat who loves boxes, toys, and the company of my owner."

Shadow, peering out from his kennel, hoping someone will take him home.

"And hey, I'm the kind of kitty who loves a good dog friend. I grew up with dogs, but must admit that other cats aren't really my thing.

I am a bit cautious around strangers, but once I trust you, I would LOVE to be petted. And as a mature, 11 year old guy, no kittenish nonsense from me, I can tell you that!

Not only have I lived with dogs, but I also used to live with kids and we were fine together.
Overall, I am a sweet cat just looking for a new home.
Do I sound like a good fit for you?
Purrs,
Shadow"

Shadow is available at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA.

Up next, celebrating World Redhead Day in his own inimitable way, we present to you: Tito.

"Meow there! Tito's my name, and being adorable is my game.

As you can see from my picture, I'm a beautiful orange and white medium-haired boy. I have little freckles on my nose, which I've been told are super cute.

I came to Wayside from another shelter that was low on space, so I'm thrilled to be here, where I know I will find my forever person or people."

"What, me? Smirk? Perish the thought! I'm just mugging for the camera!"

"In my previous home I lived with young children and sometimes played too rough with them, so I would prefer to be in a calm, quiet home without little kids. I also will need a patient adopter who will help me learn not to scratch on furniture. I have my very own scratcher at Wayside, which I can take home with me.

Also, our wonderful adoption counselors can give you information on working with me. I enjoy playtime, and my favorite toy is a feather wand. So much fun!

I also love to be brushed. My Felineality is Sidekick. That means that my favorite thing in the world is just hanging out with my favorite person or people.
Could it be you?
Love,
Tito"

And Tito's available at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs!

Allie: Did you need something, Faraday?
Faraday: No ... I'm just sitting here.
Allie: Well, go sit somewhere else so I can enjoy my mousie in private.

Allie: Oooh you lovely feather wan--

Allie: I can hear you breathing, Brat. Don't you have something better to do?
Faraday: Not really.
 (pause)

Allie: You're not going to leave, are you, Brat.
Faraday: Nuh-uh.

Allie*sigh-h-h-h*  You do know how to ruin the moment.
Faraday: Does that mean you're done with the feathers now?

Thursday's Purrs: Massimo

"Hello there, my name is Massimo. I am a cat who has seen the world, both inside and out.

Right before I came here, I was living in a nice lady's yard and she fed me for quite some time before bringing me here. Though I've been roughing it outdoors, I have to admit, having someone care for me was awfully nice."

"In fact, my hunting skills may just have lost that fine edge while I was so nicely treated. So much so in fact, that I'm ready to retire. Yep, my hunting days are over. I've decided I want a nice family of my own to coddle and feed me - indoors - all the time!

To be honest, I've seen a lot, living on the outside -- and it has made me a tad leery of strangers, so when you come to see me I might be curled up under a cat tower, observing from a safe distance. But not to worry. Once I've assessed the situation and I see what an amazing human you are, I'll come out to say hello.

In fact, want to know a secret? I love a good brushing. Indeed I do! And I'll bet a good brushing is a swell way you and I can get to know one another.

So what do you say? Why don't you come on by and see if we're a good fit for each other?
Purrs,
Massimo"

Massimo's available for adoption today at the Great Plains SPCA Adoption Center in Merriam, KS.

Faraday: No Mommy, I can't go in right now. I'm busy guarding Mister Tree.
He was recently a victim of some local Peemail.

That neighbor doggie's been eyeing this spot for the past hour.

I may hafta pull an all-nighter, Mommy.
Can you place a to-go order for a bonito flakes Happy Meal?

Thursday's Purrs: Maddie

" Meow there!

My name is Maddie, and I'm a beautiful longhaired brown and golden torbie.

What's a torbie, you ask? A cat with both tortoiseshell and tabby markings! I am super soft, and I have a marvelous purr."

"I was found as a stray. Can you believe someone let a sweet, gorgeous girl like me get away?

I can be little bashful at first, but I love attention. If you come to my kennel and talk to me, I will roll around while I'm listening, hanging on your every word. If you hold out your hand, I will give you some great headbutts. Hey, it's like I'm petting you!

You might have noticed that I'm 8 years old, but that's barely middle age for a cat. If you take good care of me, we could expect to enjoy many happy, healthy years together.

If you adopt me, I promise to take good care of you, too, giving you lots of love.

Love and headbutts,
Maddie"

Maddie's available at Allie'a Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Allie: Observe, Brat. You might even learn a thing or two.

First I speak to it. Lull it into a false sense of security.

Then I whip around and ...

Allie: That was just for demonstration purposes. Now if you'll stop crowding me ...

Faraday: Nuh-UHHH. The Rules state each contestant gets ONE whap at it.

Thursday Purrs: Vladimir

"hey there!
The name's Vladimir. You know, as in Vladimir Purr-tin ... Vlad the (not so) Bad. Keep 'em coming, guys! Yeah, I've heard 'em all, MOL!"

"I'm a handsome 3 year old mancat (if I do say so myself), just hanging out here at Great Plains waiting for my forever human to come by and be bowled over by my irresistible charm.

Did you know black cats are considered less adoptable? *horrified look* Was it something I said?!?!?
I mean, seriously, I'm an easy going, affable kinda fellow, who wouild love to be your companion for life.

And research says that we housepanthers are scientifically known to be more congenial. Did you know that?

Science doesn't lie. Just ask my purr machine if it isn't a true thang.

Whatcha waiting for?
Come on down and let's get to know one another!
Eager purrs,
Vlad"

Vladimir is available at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA today!

Celebrating #Specially-AbledPetsDay

Annually on May 3, National Specially-abled Pets Day is celebrated.

This day is set aside to educate the public about caring for disabled pets, to feature disabled animals looking for a home and encourage animal lovers to consider a disabled pet when they are looking to adopt a new family member.
 ___________________

You've seen it countless times, those cats in a shelter who are overlooked for various reasons.
Tripod cats, one-eyed cats, deaf cats, cats with special medical conditions.

I think Julie of Sometimes Cats Herd You said it best in our video, For the Animals, when she stated "they're not damaged goods at all!"

Handsome Blue Point Siamese boy is still lovable, though deaf.
Does this handsome blue boy look like damaged goods to you? We didn't think so!

Which is why I love the term Specially-abled (or Differently-abled) and not Disabled.

Because, although they may be different, they're not 'less than'. A cat missing an eye is not less lovable than one with both eyes. A cat who cannot hear can still feel your affection.

Sweet Marty was a Wayside Waif with FIV. Thankfully, he found a loving family to adopt.
Sweet Marty was a Wayside kitty who found a loving home last year. His new family didn't care that he was FIV+.
They saw past that to the love he has to give.
And a cat with FIV may be immune-challenged, but hey - as of 2 months ago, so am I.

You wouldn't consider me to be a less-worthy human being just because I now have an autoimmune disease. (or at least I certainly hope you wouldn't! ;-)

So why so we do that with cats? Or dogs? Or ferrets, or any other companion animal?

As you know, Maxwell came to us as a cat with no eardrum, who was profoundly deaf. He's truly the sweetest cat I've ever been privileged to have in my life. And when the day comes that we're ready to adopt another animal - I'll look first at those who have lived the longest in a shelter.

Isn't it ridiculous that the color of a cat's fur makes her less adoptable? Black cats might be considered specially-abled simply because of this.
Would you walk past this adorable girl just because she only has three legs?
Or perhaps it's because of the color of her fur. She's no less loving for that!

The ones that, day in and day out, are walked past. Overlooked. But still capable or great love, affection and companionship.

Won't you consider the same?

For more information: www.disabledpetday.com.
