Thursday Purrs: Carolyn

"Hello!
My name is Carolyn and I'm one of the most beautiful girls at Wayside, or so I've been told."

"I'm a dilute tuxedo torbie, which means I have some tabby stripes, beautiful blue-gray and apricot spots, and a white bib, boots and gloves. So I'm perfectly dressed for any occasion."

"I came to Wayside from another shelter that was low on space, and I'm thrilled to be here, where I just know I will find my forever home - and loads of belly rubs."

"I'm a sweet kitty who enjoys attention. I'm not fond of being picked up, though. For that reason, I shouldn't live in a home with children under age 5. Little kids, you see, don't always follow a kitty's wishes.

I looove hanging out with other cats, though."

"What else would you like to know about me? I have an adorable little meow, a nice purr - and I know how to wink! (see Exhibit A, above)."

"I'm playful, and my favorite toys are mice and wands. (Betcha couldn't tell, huh!)

If you're looking to start off 2017 with a sweet, beautiful new friend, please come to Wayside and ask for me!

Love,
Carolyn"

Carolyn's available and ready to settle in with her new humans, at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Sunday's Shelter Sweetie: Frankie

"You may be able to tell just from looking at my photos that I am a girl who is all about being sweet and loving."

"The thing is, though, that you will never know just how good I am at it until you pet me and really get the full Frankie-in-love treatment.

I really need a home without dogs who startle me, and maybe very young children too, as they can get excited easily over new things and suddenly shriek with delight.

But a home with adults, a sunny window or two and reliable mealtimes would be perfect for me. As you can see from my video, I love attention and petting and the best thing is I both love to get and give it too.

I am just waiting to give you all the loving I can. All you have to do is come down to Merriam GPSPCA and ask where you can find Frankie.

Easy as pie and even sweeter.
Purrs, Frankie"

Frankie's available for adoption today, at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA.

Sunday's Shelter Sweetie: France

"Bonjour! Hello!
I'm France, a sweet little year and a half old tortie-point snowshoe girl.
I came in with Italy, my sister. You met her a few days ago."

"I am really sweet, if a tiny bit shy. But I warm up quickly, and just looove to ronrons-- uh, I mean purr for you!

Won't you come meet me? They say France is the place to fall in love - and right now, the place where I'm living is having a "Fall in Love" shelter special. You can come make me yours for only $30 of your American dollars.

What a deal, oui?

#DailyDoseofIndependence

Here's your #DailyDoseofIndependence!

Isn't Goober a foxy looking boy?
Seriously, with that sleek, long nose, he resembles that trendy little animal, dontcha think?

Only foxes don't purr, or rub up against you and snuggle like this guy does.
And Goober is the kind of kitty who sets his own trends. Like nightly belly rubs in front of the TV while you watch your fave show.

Sound good to you? If so, he's waiting for you!

Goober's available for adoption today - along with literally hundreds of other kitties - at Great Plains SPCA in Independence, MO!

Sunday's Shelter Sweetie: Mary Lou

"Hi, Mary Lou here!

There's a volunteer here who's been a good friend since I first arrived. She always sings an old Ricky Nelson song ("Hello, Mary Lou...") to me when she visits. Most of the time I roll over on my back and beg for head rubs. Sometimes I even meow along. There are other times, though, especially when it gets to the line about "mine forevermore" when I stalk into the small side of my kennel and refuse to be lovey.

Maybe it is because no one so far has wanted to make me theirs 'forevermore'. And honestly, I am really tired of living in my little condo."

"Luckily, I got a chance to take a vacation from shelter life and am just back at the shelter relaxed and refreshed. It was sweet! I got to live with another volunteer who had an extra bedroom all for me! I was in heaven with so much space. I got to look out the windows and see people pushing baby strollers down the street; watch joggers go by with their dogs; and even get to hear the ice cream truck coming down the street.

I'm quite social actually. My foster mom says whenever she was in my room hanging out with me that I always want to be near her. I don't usually sit on her lap, but lay between her legs or curled up next to her hip - close but not smothering her, and I'm purring away.

I don't need to be held all the time like some cats, and foster mom can have her hands free for crafts or reading. I hadn't been much interested in toys, but am getting fond of a cute little plastic cat with a fish on a wire that's got a roly-poly action. I also like my ball toy and chasing mom's tape measure when she's sewing. I may not have been exposed to toys during my formative months, but I'm catching up now. Love those rolly balls that whiz by too!

I love being brushed with my own little pink brush. It has a soft side that I love having rubbed on the top of my head and down my back, but especially on my cheeks. I like being petted and having my cheeks rubbed with a human hand too, though sometimes I can gently nip if it's too much of a good thing. I don't break the skin or leave a scratch, just my way of saying "enough already!". I do it less and less as I'm getting to know my frequent visitors. I've got them trained now so that if they see my dirty look, they stop unless they're not paying attention.

I don't like other cats for some reason. People think I'm afraid of them and at the shelter, it's even a bit worse seeing so many. I didn't like my foster mother's cats either and they're nice to me. One especially wanted to be my friend, but I had to say "no, thank you". I'm really going to need to be your only kitty. Is that okay with you? I promise to give you so much love and attention that you'd think you had a whole pack of friendly kitties living with you.

I like it here but I want my very own person or family. I want to be able to follow my human around and see everything that's going on and not be bothered by other animals. There's a great big world out there I want to explore and so far, I've only gotten to see a little piece of it. Sadly, I've spent half my life in the shelter so am more than ready to see much much more. Would you be willing to share your world with me?

I promise to be yours forevermore.

All my love, Mary Lou"

Mary Lou has been waiting a very, very long time for her forevermore at Great Plains SPCA, Merriam. And - til the end of August - she can go home with you for free. All fees are waived!

Sunday's Shelter Sweetie: Baby

"Hello, my name is Baby. I was given that name because I am so precious!
Also, I'm very pretty-see my beautiful green eyes?"

"My friends here at Great Plains SPCA describe me as sweet, loving, cuddly and talkative. What more could you ask for in a forever cat companion?

I do have to admit that I'm a little bit shy, though. I'm just not very brave with new people or in new situations. But please don't let that stop you! Once I get to know you, I'm sure we'll become BFFs!

I'm hoping to find a quieter home, without too much noise or commotion. Us shy girls like to feel safe. So, if you're needing a sweet, loving companion, please come very soon and ask to meet me. I'm so anxious to have my very own human to love!

Yours, Baby"

Baby is available for adoption today (along with 700 kennel-mates!), at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA.

Wednesday's Waif: Goldie

"My meow has the Midas touch!

Hello my name is Goldie, and I am truly grateful you took the time to read my profile."

"I am a orange and white medium haired male feline that is looking for their snuggle partner. I am a very sweet, quiet, calm guy who can be a little shy when we first meet, but I will warm up quickly to you! And I looove to play and chase and - oh, did I mention I adore beint petted? I do, truly!

I came here to Wayside because the shelter I was at was running out of space, so I was brought here to find my forever home. I am really hoping that home will be with you!

My felineality is personal assistant and that means that I will always be willing to lend you a helping paw.

My soft fur and one of a kind purr can truly only be appreciated in person, so please come down.

Ask to see the cat with a heart of gold!

Love, Goldie"

Goldie's truly a fantastic boycat - you have to meet him to see how friendly and fun he is.

Sunday's Shelter Sweetheart: Jordan

"So there I was, livin' life on the lam on the mean streets of Independence, Missouri.

Don't ask me how I got there, or how long I was "at large", as they say. (I'm not very good with calendars.) All I know is my roaming days were numbered. Yep, animal control! Busted!

So then I end up here at Great Plains SPCA, where they treated me to a little surgery to curb my wanton ways. Ahem."

"Well, I couldn't let that pass, so I decided to give them a bit of hard time. A little kitty attitude, if you get my drift. And that's when it happened.

They banished me from the general population and sent me to a place called "Tish's Office". Ahhhhh, Tish's office!!! Cat nirvana!!!

And that was it. Bye-bye catitude!!! Hello easy streets!!! Now, I'm livin' the good life. Three squares a day and a nice warm bed. Plenty of cat toys to keep me busy. And Tish, of course! That Tish is quite a cat whisperer! And now Tish tells me things are about to get even better! Better than nirvana? Yep, she swears it's true.

Though I've had a long, hard journey up till now, she says someone will fall in love with me soon and take me to something called a forever home. Hey, this forever home thing sounds pretty sweet! I've been dreaming of what it will be like, and I'd really like a home with a human or humans who are willing to play with me.

I've got lots of energy and need to burn off a little steam each day. I'm an ace with a wand toy! Also hoping my new human likes to have a sidekick around. I'm a smart guy, and I enjoy mental stimulation and human companionship.

I'd love to help you work on your computer, do some chores or snuggle up next to you in the evening while you read a book. But most of all, I'm dreaming of a home that's filled with love. Tish has taught me a lot about this love thing. And now I'm ready to find my very own human to love. Have I mentioned that I give great kitty kisses????

So, how about it? Is there room in your family for a reformed fella like me? If so, come on down to Great Plains and let's spend a little time together. I may even show you Tish's office.

Just ask for Jordan. I'll be waiting! And hoping!"

Jordan's available at the Independence campus of Great Plains SPCA!

Wednesday's Waif: Bengal

Who wouldn't want this handsome boy? Why, with those gorgeous, speaking eyes, he could be Waffles' older brother!

Yet for some reason, he's one of the kitties who has been at Wayside the longest. We just can't figure this out.

"Are you looking for someone extraordinary?
Do typical tabbies and pedestrian pussycats make you sigh with ennui as you meet their commonplace green or yellow eyes?

If so, I invite you to gaze into my opulent orange orbs. These twinkling topaz gems compliment my gorgeous ginger fur in a way that makes me absolutely unforgettable!

As you might imagine, a creature as refined and rare as I am has class and decorum emitting from the proverbial wazoo. I don't jump into the arms of every human I meet but rather delight in the slow blooming of friendship.

To be frank, I find humans who hover and grab a bit shocking. Let me get to know you with delicate sniffs of my rosebud nose. Once we have become acquainted, I'll allow you to caress my ears slowly.
In time, we will be on lap-sitting terms, having become the best of companions!

Naturally, a feline of my class has... certain standards. I don't enjoy associating with uncouth cats and those most vile of barbarians: dogs!

If you share my enlightened sensibilities, I implore you to call on me in my chambers here at Wayside Waifs.

I'm sure my assistants can pencil in a time for us to meet.

Most sophistcatedly,
Bengal"

Sunday's Shelter Sweetheart: Handsome

Look at the sweet expression on this boy's face! Who could resist?
Read on to hear his story:

"Hi there!

They call me "Handsome." Yep, that's my name!

Well, in all modesty, I guess it's true too. At least that's what everyone says. For some silly reason, they all think my crossed eyes are fetching! Or maybe its my silver and gray stripes.

Or maybe it's my lost tail! Yep, I lost my tail! Can't tell you where it went, but it's not back there any more. They say it makes me unique.

But, hey, that's on the surface. What I really matters is what's inside. And what's inside me is lots and lots of love!!! I LOVE people! I love to cuddle and snuggle and have my belly rubbed.

Really, you can pet me just anywhere and I'll be in heaven. You'll know by that great big purr motor I turn on every time someone comes near.

All I want is someone to love! I've been here at Great Plains awhile now, and there are sure a lot of nice people to love here.

My kitty roommates are great friends, too. But I'm hoping every day for some special person to come and take me to my fur-ever home.

Then I'll have my very own human to love the rest of my life--my dream come true. So, if you're looking for someone to love, I hope you'll come out to Independence and say "hello." I have a feeling I could make your dream of someone to love come true too!

Waiting with love,
Handsome"

Handsome is available for adoption today at Great Plains SPCA's Independence Campus - 21001 E 78 Hwy, Independence, MO:

Sunday's Shelter Sweetheart: Snow White

Just take a look at this sweet Fairytale Princess!

"Hi,
my name is Snow White and I am certainly a beautiful white cat.

I was originally found as a stray by a nice lady who brought me here. I am so lucky to be safe and in the care of Great Plains SPCA. Everyone here loves me and they all like to cuddle! Yay!

I have lots of people to play with, and boy do I ever love to play! And I have a nice a warm, safe place to sleep and plenty of food to eat. (Maybe even a little too much food--I think I've put on a pound or two!)

Not to brag, but I was recently even promoted to free-roamer status. That means I get the run of the whole place because I am such a good girl and so friendly! I am also very grateful for the help they have given me with my eyes.

You see, I have a condition that causes my eyes to get crusty tears. They give me some eye drops for it here, and it sure helps. The vets say it's nothing to worry about, but I do need to have my drops. I know that's a lot to ask from a new, forever family.

But I hope you will think I'm worth it. I am such a sweet, loving, playful girl that a few eye drops really shouldn't keep us apart! And the vets would be glad to explain all about it if it worries you.

I guess we all have little problems like this now and then. Can you overlook my minor flaw and call me your forever family? I've been waiting awhile now, hoping to find someone who will look past the crusties and see the loving heart underneath.

I promise that if you can do that, you will never, ever be lonely with me in your family!

Love and purrs,
Snow White"

And you can watch this fairytale princess show you her wicked wand toy moves, right here in living color:

Snow White is available for adoption at Great Plains SPCA's Merriam Campus today!

Sunday's Shelter Sweetheart: Mindy

It breaks our hearts when we hear of a kitty who has been at a shelter for over a year without finding their very own human.

We'd like for you to meet just such a girl. She's waiting at Great Plains SPCA's Merriam Campus:

"My name is Mindy, and I am looking for just the right person or people to make me a member of their family.

When I first came here, I had a really tough time. I had been abandoned by my former guardians who left me in a parking lot. Whatever my life was before had left me wary of new humans. I was so scared. I've been working very, very hard since I came here though. At first, all I would do was hide in the back of my kennel. I really liked it when people came to talk to me softly and pet me gently, but I always stayed hidden.

Then one day my friend Kathryn noticed that I was coming to the front of the kennel to watch the other kitties play when I thought no one was looking. That gave everyone a great idea. They let me move into a playroom to live with other kitties. Being with the other kitties all the time helped me relax. They showed me just how nice the humans here are. And they showed me how to trust again.

Now, I'm doing so much better. I don't hide any more like I used to. I do still get scared when a stranger comes in. I think I will always be wary of new humans no matter what. But if the human is gentle and loving with me, I always come to trust them in the end. I love to be petted! And even though I'm not quite brave enough (yet) to ask for attention, I sure will thank you for it with a soft, steady purr.

Kathryn says someone will be coming soon to take me to my forever home. Hopefully it will be a quiet one without too much commotion that might scare me. And hopefully there will be someone there with love and patience in their heart for a girl who just needs a chance. And maybe there will even be another kitty there--I do like to be with other kitties.

Kathryn helped me make a video for you to see. I'm a little bit more shy than normal in it--that camera thingy of Kathryn's had me a little spooked. But I hope you can see just how big my heart is and how much I want to love and be loved. After everything that's happened to me, that has never, ever changed. So, if you have a place for me in your home and your heart, I hope you'll come to visit me soon.

I've been waiting so long and working so hard to find my way home. I know that once my very own humans take me home, my true, loving nature will shine through, and the future will be nothing but bright.

Waiting and hoping,
Mindy"

Are you the person for Mindy? She sure hopes so:

She's waiting for you at Great Plains.

Wednesday's Waif: Diamond

Who's black and white and adorable all over?

Diamond!

"I'm a very handsome, soft, short-haired boy with one of the cutest faces around, or so I've been told. I was roaming the streets as a stray kitty, but fortunately a nice lady took me in.

She couldn't keep me, so she did a wonderful thing by bringing me here to Wayside, where I can receive food, shelter and love while I wait for my forever person or people to come in and fall in love with me.

My rescuer says I'm an independent, friendly kitty who likes to be petted. However, I can be a little swatty and nippy on occasion, so it would be best if I'm adopted by an experienced owner who is willing to work with me on my kitty manners.

When they did my Felineality test here at Wayside, they said I'm a Secret Admirer. That means I tend to be timid in new situations, but I do love people. When you're home, I will want to be with you, and when you're away, I'll be thinking of you.

I may never be the bravest cat around, but I could be one of the most loving. If you're looking for a cute boy kitty to share your life with, please ask for me, Diamond!

Love, Diamond"

Don't you think Diamonds are a human's best friend?
This Diamond is available for adoption today, at Wayside Waifs!

Less Adoptable: Older Cats

Guest Blogger: Michelle Cour, Wayside Waifs Volunteer (and “Wordsmith Par Excellence”!)
_______
This is post # 4 in a series, read post #3, at www.seabasscat.com.

Hello! It's Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet week and unfortunately, one of the categories that's harder to adopt is pairs. Cats thats have lived together a long time are bonded and would not do well without each other. Unfortunately many people fear the extra cost or worry if they have the time for two. We can answer your questions and allay your fears.

We're Ronnie and Jelly and we'd like to do a commercial why cat pairs (especially us) make wonderful pets. Pairs are devoted to each other and are already good and close friends. You'd never have to worry if we'd get along together. We have a proven track record of success together.

Though cats love humans, y'all are a bit odd and often don't “get” us. Another cat would, and we need understanding as much as food, water and shelter. Not your fault—Mars and Venus thing! We can admire each other's unique abilities. Yours—to get the tops off the tuna cans, and ours—to twist ourselves into furry pretzels to clean our tushies.

When you're busy, we entertain each other and don't guilt you into holding or petting us, and let's face it, with kids and a spouse or a demanding job, when aren't you busy? Had a bad day and need something soft and comforting to hold? (No, not a beer can!) You need something soft and warm and with two, you'd have twice the comfort in half the time. Studies prove that petting a cat lowers blood pressure and reduces anxiety. Get our purr motors going and that sound can lull you to sleep.

Two do cost a bit more than one, but a single bored cat can overeat so not much difference. We chase each other and get exercise so are often healthier and don't need you for a playmate. When you're scooping out food, how hard is it to scoop enough food for two? Easy peasy! Most vets don't charge for a second office visit for annual exams, just the vaccines which are pretty cheap.

We have a special challenge so are looking for a special family. We're 4 and 5 years old, with probably 10 or 12 years left to live. Tons of fun and affection left, but let's face it, many people want cute little kittens. Just wait till they climb the drapes and shred them, or whine incessantly at midnight for attention! Kittens aren't problem free and need lots more of you than older cats. You also don't know what the final personality will be. With us you do - two sweet girls!

We have to go home together, so hope you fall for both of us. Looking forward to meeting you.

Love,
Veronica and Jelly Bean
