Thursday's Purrs: Savannah

"hullo there! I'm Savannah.

I'm known around these parts as the Grand Lady. I love greeting guests, and will reach up to you and 'knead' you with my declawed paws - right in your belly, if you're standing close enough for me to reach. And if you're not paying attention to me.

(I can't help it if I was raised to believe it's rude to ignore a lady sitting right in front of you, so a gentle paw-biscuit session is just my way of reminding you that I'm here)

Savannah: Don't I have the most stunning green eyes?
Don't I have the most stunning green eyes?

"Due to certain circumstances, I was brought here to Great Plains, but I was very well loved in my last home and am ready to join yours -- today, if you'd like.

Because I'm declawed, I have a touch of arthritis in my back at the base of my tail, so I prefer that you focus all your attention on ear and cheek scritches, if you please. I simply adore them!

It's been said I'm a bit lippy, but can I help it if I am a lady who knows what she wants? I may reach out with my soft front paw and grab your hand to give it a gentle nip, but that's only to instruct you. Sometimes it's a gentle reminder that means you're ignoring me, and sometimes it may be to remind you I've got a touch of arthritis back there. But it's always gentle and quick."

(my opinion of shelter life. I'm soooo ready for my forever home!)

"Speaking of quick .... I'm not terribly fond of fast movements. They make me nervous and I may nip to let you know you spooked me! But honestly ... if you'll just go a bit slow with me, especially at first, we'll be fast friends in no time at all!

As you can see I am a beautiful girl. I'm considered a senior, but don't let that fool you. It just means that I've got all my kittenish behavior out of my system, and I now act like a civilized cat.

So if your looking for the perfect cat, please come down and say hello!

Purrs,
Savannah"

Savannah's available at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA, where she ruled the roost last week when our mom and her Hallmark crew filmed all morning long (shh, it's super top secret, and Savannah's sworn her lips are sealed!).

Thursday's Purrs: Baby

"Would you do me a huge favor? Go cuddle up next to your human for me, will you?

(um, and if you're a human, give your furry family a squeeze or two)

I recently learned the hard way how life can change dramatically in the blink of an eye. You see, I lost everything - EVERYTHING - in a fire. My humans and I are now homeless."

"No cat expects to be 16 years old and suddenly end up in a kennel, particularly not when he has spent every one of those 16 years sleeping next to his people in their bed. But here I am.

My family isn't sure how things will turn out or what their future holds, so they thought it might be better if some kind human would take me into their home. You know, instead of any more traumatic upheavals while things are so up in the air.

Besides, I didn't come out completely unscathed. I suffered some burns on my paws, and some smoke inhalation. No worries -- I've healed well, and I've even settled in well, here at the shelter. But I'd sure love a cozy home instead. I miss cuddling with my humans every evening."

"I'm told I look and act much younger than my age, and I make friends easily.

Won't you please come in and see if we might make a good team?

Purrs,
Baby"

Baby's waiting to meet you today - at the Main Branch of Kansas City Pet Project.

Thursday's Purrs: Marshmallow

"If you're looking for a fluffy friend, look no further!

I'm Marshmallow and I'm just as sweet and soft as you'd expect. I'm a beautiful British Shorthaired kitty with white fur. I'm eight years old but I still have plenty of life to live and love to give.

Can you keep a secret? I love being petted. I mean, looooooove it.

As in, well ... I'm kind of a drooler.
But honestly, can you blame me? Getting scritches is totally drool-worthy in my book."

The ladies over at Wayside tell me I remind them of Winston Churchill. Well, I am British, after all. Can I help it if I have a pouty mouth?

Um, can you keep another secret? I have been known to give out wet, slobbery kitty kisses. A lot. So many, in fact that the ladies have named me the Don Juan of the Cat Adoptions area.

Personality-wise, I'm a Secret Admirer -- which means I might be a little shy at first, but once we get to know each other, well, I won't be able to resist you!

Need a hug? A kiss? A bit of drool?
I'm your mancat!

Sitting by my kennel door,
anxiously awaiting you,

(Sir) Marshmallow Churchill"

Marshmallow's available today, at Allie's alma mater, Wayside Waifs.

Thursday's Purrs: Meeko

"Hullo, nice to meet you. My name's Meeko. Are you looking for someone to keep you warm as the weather gets colder? Well then, I'm the guy for you!

I'm not one to brag or anything, but a 12 year old mancat like myself likes to cut straight to the point. Did you know I'm a favorite with the ladies over at Wayside?

Margaret calls me Meeko the Magnificent. And Honor gets me, she really gets me. She says I'm a sweet lovebug and a real lapcat (I have to admit I love me some cuddles, I do!)."

I call this my "hellooo ladies" expression

"I'm a total people person, in case you couldn't guess. I'll love hanging around you. And I might be a mature mancat but you should see my playful side. No ... really ... take a look. Scroll down to the video and check out my moves. That headtilt is my signature move, if I do say so myself.

Oh, there is one more little thing. No big deal, really. I'm FIV positive, but that just means that my immune system is somewhat compromised, so it's extra important that I have an indoors-only lifestyle, good food and regular veterinary care.

But hey, those are things a good adopter would give any cat, right?
Check out my smooth moves below, and then come on over to Wayside so we can get started on all that snuggling, what say?

Purrs,
Meeko"

This adorable, fun, absolute sweetheart is available at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Thursday's Purrs: Penny

"Hello, and thanks for taking a moment to hear my story.
My name is Penny. I'm a torbie girl (that's a tortoiseshell/tabby combination) and folks say I got my name from the beautiful coppery spots in my luxurious coat.

I came to Wayside because my previous person passed away.

It's sad, and a bit daunting, to be honest -- starting over at the age of 10. But that's just middle age for a cat."

"I'm thankful to have a second chance to start a wonderful new life with a very special someone. I do tend to be shy at first, but if you approach slowly and gently, I warm up pretty quickly. And even though I am shy and cautious, I do love people very much.

It might take some time to get to know me, but trust me, I am worth it. I'm really a big cuddle bug at heart, and would love to snuggle next to you. I love being brushed, and will purr like a little motor boat for you!"

"I'd love to go to a home with a nice window that will let me observe all of the interesting things that the outdoors has to offer. (I've been known to binge-watch the BirdTv channel here at Wayside *embarrassed look*)

I don't mind being picked up sometimes and i have also done well coexisting with other feline friends. Let's have our first conversation today, at Wayside!?
Love, Penny"

Penny's available at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Thursday's Purrs: Darla

"Pleased to meet you! I'm Darla, a very pretty torbie (tabby/tortoiseshell) girl with just about the most gorgeous green eyes you've ever seen.

I was surrendered to Wayside because someone in my previous family had allergies. I also came to Wayside with my previous housemate, Dixie. We can be adopted together or separately. As you can imagine, I like other cats (Dixie's one, after all!)."

"I lived with dogs and kids in my old home, too, and co-existed with them, sort of. My previous family describes me as an independent cat who loves to cuddle at night.

Here at Wayside, people say I'm a shy kitty who does enjoy attention once I feel comfortable. I prefer people who are calm and patient. So I probably would be happier in a home that's more like a library than a carnival.

At age 8 I'm right in my prime, ready to be a loving, loyal, steadfast companion. I can't wait to meet you!
Love, Darla"

Darla's available at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Thursday's Purrs: Alfie

"Hey, is there such a thing as Tongue-Out Thursday?
Because if so, I'm so there."

"How'd I do?

You know, for an older guy like me, it's kinda hard to keep track of all these new-fangled social media trend things. But I'm game for anything.

I'm especially game for a new home. My fur may be a bit scruffy around the edges, and these bones creak a bit more each year, but I sure do have a lot of loving left to give.

Are you looking for a snuggle buddy, someone to curl up with you while you play on one of those devices all the young'uns are using these days, like Netflux and HulaHoop?

If so, I'm your mancat.

Please come out and see me. At 12 years, I've learned to value every second of every day - with none to waste. So I'm all packed and ready to head home with you, any time.

Just ask for the dapper orange moggie when you get out here, and they'll direct you to me straightaway.

Purrs and soft paw-pats,
Alfie"

Alfie is waiting for you at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Thursday's Purrs: Vera

Every Thursday, beginning this week, we'll be adding another great no-kill shelter into our kitty spotlight schedule: KC Pet Project.

This week, we'd like you to meet Vera.

Vera's photo courtesy Jill Reneé Photography. Used with permission.

According to the staff and volunteers at KC Pet Project, Vera may be the current queen of the Cat Adoption Room! We hear that she can usually be found on top of one of cat trees, looking down on her subjects.

All kidding aside, this is one girl who is just too sweet to be "in charge." She is a free roamer, though - which means that she doesn't have to stay cooped up in a kennel.

That also means you never know where you might find this pretty girl hanging out when you come to visit her in the Adoption Room. And once you meet her, you'll see why: she's a real social kind of gal! Vera loves being around people and she loves the company of other cats.

This lady is gifted with beautiful markings and incredibly soft fur. But be careful - she's kind of addictive. And she's not above begging to be picked up and carried around the room, too (something many otherwise friendly cats might not be too thrilled with!).

Come in and meet this dignified lady and let her work her magic on you.
You'll quickly see what a great addition she would be to your family!

Thursday's Purrs: Maddie

" Meow there!

My name is Maddie, and I'm a beautiful longhaired brown and golden torbie.

What's a torbie, you ask? A cat with both tortoiseshell and tabby markings! I am super soft, and I have a marvelous purr."

"I was found as a stray. Can you believe someone let a sweet, gorgeous girl like me get away?

I can be little bashful at first, but I love attention. If you come to my kennel and talk to me, I will roll around while I'm listening, hanging on your every word. If you hold out your hand, I will give you some great headbutts. Hey, it's like I'm petting you!

You might have noticed that I'm 8 years old, but that's barely middle age for a cat. If you take good care of me, we could expect to enjoy many happy, healthy years together.

If you adopt me, I promise to take good care of you, too, giving you lots of love.

Love and headbutts,
Maddie"

Maddie's available at Allie'a Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Thursday's Purrs: Millie

"Hello there! My name is Millie - but some of the people here at Great Plains call me Grace. Just the other day someone whispered to me that I was as sweet and graceful as could be.

They said that if my gorgeous dilute tortie fur doesn't draw you in, my sweet curious personality was sure to!"

"I have a bit of a hard-luck story to tell you. Someone found me in an elementary school playground, you see, all lost and alone. Then they brought me here to Great Plains SPCA.

They have taken very good care of me here, but I think I'm ready to go home and find my forever family. Don't be worried about me being an older girl, it just means I'm pre-loved and I know how to be a good kitty.

In fact, I'm still very curious and playful!"

"I may be on the quieter side, but I have a loud personality to make up for it.
And, I just love to be petted!

(P.S. I may look like I am sleeping when you come see me, but I am really just resting up, waiting to be loved, honest!)

Please won't you come pay me a visit?

Hopeful purrrs,
Millie"

Millie's available at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA.

Sunday's Shelter Sweetie: Inky

"Hello there, my name is Inky!

From the moment you meet me, you will notice the beauty mark on my face.
I suppose that dashing little smudge might be where I got my name - you never can tell!"

"You may notice that I'm a bit mature at 13 years, but don't judge me based on my age. I've still got a lot of spunk in me!

I love to be petted and would be a great lap cat companion. In my opinion, the best cats are ones that will just relax with you on a lazy weekend or a calm night after a long day of work or school."

"I'm a great listener, too. You can tell me anything and I'll love you for just talking to me!

I love to curl up on soft blankets and take it easy. I would possibly test out some fun toys with you. So come on in and meet me today.
I'm waiting patiently to meet my forever family and go home!

Purrs,
Inky"

Sunday's Shelter Sweetie: Sally

"Hello,
Do you remember that movie, "When Harry Met Sally"? Well, I'm Sally."

"Do you think there might be a Harry, or a Steve, or a Martha just waiting to meet me, too?
I sure hope so, because I'm ready to go spend my days curled up and purring in a loving lap.

I'm just a sweet, loving middle-aged lady looking for someone to call my own. I have a gentle and nurturing disposition and would love nothing more than to cuddle next to you in the evenings to share some time together.

I'm looking for a second chance at life with someone who treasures every moment as much as I do. I love to be petted. Do you love to hear purring? We may just be the purr-fect match.

purrs, Sally"

Sally is available today at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA!

Wednesday's Waif: Esther

"Hello, my name is Esther. I am living proof that you should never judge a book by its cover. I mean, just look at me - a 13-year-young, spunky Calico with a beautiful balance of love and energy.

At just 5 pounds, I am a wee little cat, often mistaken for a kitten. I love to be cradled like a baby in your arms but can also run throughout your house chasing a toy mouse at warp speed!"

"I'm in foster care because I am happiest when I have someone to share my love. Being alone stresses me out. Foster Mom says I do very well with her other cats and her dog. I have a deep yearning to crawl onto the back of the 70-lb dog to take a nap. He doesn't scare me at all. It just looks like the best bed ever - can you imagine? Unfortunately, the canine does not approve, and Foster Mom keeps scooping me up.

I was found as a stray but once had people who really loved me. My last family took such good care of me that most of my teeth have been professionally pulled. Though it's sad I lost my people, I remain positive for my future.

I have a chronic sneeze from time to time. (Once in a while, you might even need to help me wipe my nose.)

I need a person who will be there for me. Perhaps you are retired, or you work from home? I am not picky, but you see...I don't like being left alone for hours. I would also enjoy a kind dog for cuddling, (though it's not a deal breaker if there isn't one).

I would also prefer a calm home.  And since I only have a few teeth, I need a soft, wet food diet.

Please call Wayside to set up a time to meet me. Foster Mom says you can't help but love me. She is smitten - and is sure you will be too!

Yours forever...I hope,
Esther"

Esther is available today at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs!

Wednesday's Waif: Zara

"Sure, kittens are cute, but come on! I have nine years experience in being adorable."

"I'm Zara, and you won't find a more devoted friend than me.

They call me a "private investigator" because I like to take my time getting to know people. Once I can trust you, though, I'll be hitting you up for back scratches whenever I can get them."

"At my age, I like to take it slow and appreciate the simple things in life-- naps on the couch, a stretch in the sun, and the company of a good friend.

If you need a reminder to take it slow, I'm the girl for you.

Come say hello, won't you?
Purrs,
Zara"

Zara's available for adoption today at Wayside Waifs!

Wednesday's Waif: Midnight Train

"Choo-choo! Hi, I'm Midnight Train. Isn't that a different and unique name? I wonder if they chose it for me because of my throaty purr. You think?"

"I'm a dainty, velvety medium-haired black kitty with the most amazing, soulful golden eyes. I was transferred to Wayside from another shelter that was out of space.

I'm shy at first, but if you speak to me softly and pet me gently, we will be best friends in no time! Gently stroking my back helps me relax, and I love it.

I will also give some soft, velvety headbutts to your hand. You might have noticed that I'm 8 years old, but that is just middle age for a cat. If you take good care of me, we can expect to have many good years together."

"I believe in second chances, and I hope there's someone out there reading this who does, too. Come to Wayside and meet me, and maybe we will choo-choo-choose each other!

Love,
Miss MT"

Wednesday's Waif: Buddy

Meow friends! My name is Buddy, and I am very handsome male tabby cat."

"I came to Wayside because - well, unfortunately my previous person passed away.
And though I've enjoyed my time here at Wayside, I'm really ready to find my new forever home.

I am hoping it is with you!

I am a ten year old, easy-going guy who'll stick right next to you while you are watching a movie or cheering on your favorite team. And please don't let my age put me off. I'm mature enough now to let go of those silly, kitten-headed things like chewing on your iPad cord or ricocheting off your forehead at 2 in the morning.  That's a GOOD thing - wouldn't you agree?

My felineality is sidekick, and that means I'm Good Company: I  love attention (hey, I give and receive it!), but I am also okay with solitude.

I'm ready to be a steady companion. So come on down so that we can start our new life together! Love,
Buddy"

Buddy's available at Allie's Alma Mater: Wayside Waifs.

#LightForPets & Shelter Double-Header

Since someone went AWOL on Sunday *looks meaningfully at Mommy* we missed our regularly scheduled Shelter Sweetie. And yesterday's post for Wednesday's Waif, too.

But that's okay, because today is the perfect day to rectify that.

Today we join with the Helen Woodward Center - and all participating shelters across the U.S. - for Remember Me Thursday. The aim is to shed light on the plight of those animals in shelters still in need of a home.

According to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, only 30% of American households claim rescue animals for a pet. That's shamefully low! And this accounts, in part, for the 3.4 million pets euthanized annually here in America.

So today, we join in lighting a candle (virtually for us, but you can check for participating shelters in your area at this link here) in honor of those homeless pets.

And we wish to shed a light today on two such animals in need right here in our backyard.

Up first, this week's Shelter Sweetie from Great Plains SPCA in Independence:

"Ciao, amici! Hello friends!
My name is Italy. (Betcha couldn't tell, huh?)
I'm a lovely little siamese mix girl just waiting to purr her way into your heart.
Be warned! I'm a real charmer!"

"The staff here at Great Plains love to pet me and call me Mia Bella, "my beauty." That's so sweet of them, don't you think? So when they pet me, I purr up a storm!

I'd love to purr for you, too. Won't you come meet me?

Ciao for now,
Italy"

Italy is available at the Independence Missouri Campus of Great Plains SPCA

Next, our Wednesday's Waif from Wayside Waifs in Kansas City is a Super Double Top Secret girl.

Any fan of the TV show NCIS will instantly recognize Zivah, that show's stunningly gorgeous Mossad agent. Our Zivah's equally captivating, don't you think?

Zivah is a long-haired tortie girl who is affectionate and loves attention.
She's ready to come celebrate the High Holy Days with you, today!"

Come meet her at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs!

Sunday's Shelter Sweetheart: Taco

"Hi, Taco here!

I am a distinguished gentleman, looking for a loving home in which to spend my golden years. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not exactly over-the-hill yet! No sir!

I'm 12 years young, enjoying life, and planning to spend plenty more years continuing to do just that."

"The folks here at Great Plains are super, but a guy likes me needs a forever home of his own.

Being an experienced pet, I know that I can bring a lot of love and happiness to whomever will give me that chance. I'm a very sweet guy. I just love to be petted and to cuddle. Give me a nice warm window perch and lots of love and we're set!

I'm too old to climb your curtains, but not to old to climb into your lap!

So I hope you'll come down to Great Plains to meet me today. I've got my bags packed and am ready to go home with you if we hit it off. Time to start enjoying those golden years together. The best is yet to be!!!

Love, Taco"

Sweet Taco is available at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA.

Wednesday's Waif: Rita Delight

But wait - it's Thursday.
You caught us.

With all the craziness going on, we were unable to make Rita's post happen before now.
And she so deserves the exposure - and a forever home!

Please read on to hear about this lovely girl's story:

"Hello my future forever family! My name is Rita Delight, and I am so happy you took the time to read a little more about me.

I am a medium haired grey and buff female kitty who is declawed on my front paws. I came here to Wayside because my previous person passed away. I have really enjoyed my time here at Wayside but I am ready to find my new forever home, and I am hoping that home will be with you.

I am a very gentle, sweet, shy lady who is looking for a calm, quiet, stress free home. My felineality is Executive, which means that I am a busy girl who loves to check everything out.

I love to look out the windows at the birds, explore closets, and - like most cats - I do love a good nap!

I am also very affectionate and will always be thinking of new ways to show you how much I love you.

I have been described as being a very clean kitty (I do prefer to have two litter-boxes that are cleaned daily, I'm kind of fastidious that way) and I will make sure that I clean up after myself as much as I can!

I would love the chance to meet you so please come down to Wayside. I know once we meet you will see what a Delight I truly am to have around!

Love,
Rita Delight "

(please excuse the fact our human titled the video Rita Divine - although we think she's that, too!)

Miss Delight is waiting for her forever family at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

http://www.waysidewaifs.org/
