Thursday's Purrs: Darla

"Pleased to meet you! I'm Darla, a very pretty torbie (tabby/tortoiseshell) girl with just about the most gorgeous green eyes you've ever seen.

I was surrendered to Wayside because someone in my previous family had allergies. I also came to Wayside with my previous housemate, Dixie. We can be adopted together or separately. As you can imagine, I like other cats (Dixie's one, after all!)."

"I lived with dogs and kids in my old home, too, and co-existed with them, sort of. My previous family describes me as an independent cat who loves to cuddle at night.

Here at Wayside, people say I'm a shy kitty who does enjoy attention once I feel comfortable. I prefer people who are calm and patient. So I probably would be happier in a home that's more like a library than a carnival.

At age 8 I'm right in my prime, ready to be a loving, loyal, steadfast companion. I can't wait to meet you!
Love, Darla"

Darla's available at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Orange you glad it's Thursday?

We are!

And we have two very unique Oranges to share with you today!
(you did know most orange moggies are male, right?)
We're celebrating Orange Girlcat Power here today, with two very Eligible Bachelorettes:
Godiva and Ruby.

Up first: Godiva.

"Pleased to meet you! I'm Godiva, and I think they call me that cause I'm very sweet, like those fancy chocolates by the same name."

"I'm so thankful you are taking a moment to read about me. I came to Wayside from another shelter that was low on space, but I'm excited to be here, where I can find my forever person or people.

I don't mean to brag, but I've heard people say that I'm one of the cutest kitties at Wayside. They say I have an adorable little face and and a chubby little body. I have cute little freckles on my nose."

"I'm a very friendly, affectionate girl. I love to have my tummy rubbed and my back scratched. I also enjoy sitting on laps, so if you have one of those, that would be great! At my previous shelter, I was housed with other cats and got along just fine with them.

I also like children. So, if you have a cat or a kid who needs a friend, I may be a good fit."

"There's one more thing you should know about me: I am FIV-positive. But really, FIV isn't as scary as it sounds, honest! It just means that my immune system is somewhat compromised, so it's extra important that I have an indoors-only lifestyle and get good food and regular veterinary care.

That's what any great adopter would give a cat, right? I have my own room at Wayside, and I hope you will drop in on me soon

Love, purrs and orange headbutts,
Godiva"

Next up: RUBY!

"Hello there! My name is Ruby! I think they call me that because of my beautiful red (or orange) coat. Oh, and also because I'm a real gem. I'm a sweet, talkative, domestic shorthair girl who loves people very much."

"I'm declawed on all four paws. I was surrendered to Wayside because my previous person was moving and couldn't take me along. I was pretty scared and shy when I first came to Wayside, but the the wonderful staff and volunteers here have been working with me, and I have come a long way in a pretty short time.

I adore affection, and I love being petted on my neck, head, chin and ears. However, I'm not at all fond of being picked up. For that reason, I should go to a home with no children under the age of 5."

"I really love to play, too, and my favorite toy is a wand toy. It's so much fun! Wayside has a new program called Slumber Paw-ty, where potential adopters can take pets home for a trial run before making a commitment. I am eligible for that program."

So, if you're thinking about adding a ruby-red bundle of sweetness and love to your life, why don't you come to Wayside and check me out?

(Psst! Guess what? You might be able to see me LIVE on Wayside's Kitty Cam today!
Be sure to wave hello if you do!)

I can't wait to meet you!
Love and orange purrs,
Ruby"

These gorgeous orange girls are both available at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

Thinking of Feral Cats and Food

Today is both National Feral Cat Day and World Food Day.

As I look at the sweet, hearing-impaired boy who brings joy to each day, I realize that he, too, could easily have been both feral and without food.

If it weren't for the kind people who rescued and fostered him until he could find his forever home.

Today, if you can, donate an hour to a shelter to help socialize cats.
And if you can, donate food to those shelters working so hard to find these sweet kitties a home.

Sunday's Shelter Sweetie: Sally

"Hello,
Do you remember that movie, "When Harry Met Sally"? Well, I'm Sally."

"Do you think there might be a Harry, or a Steve, or a Martha just waiting to meet me, too?
I sure hope so, because I'm ready to go spend my days curled up and purring in a loving lap.

I'm just a sweet, loving middle-aged lady looking for someone to call my own. I have a gentle and nurturing disposition and would love nothing more than to cuddle next to you in the evenings to share some time together.

I'm looking for a second chance at life with someone who treasures every moment as much as I do. I love to be petted. Do you love to hear purring? We may just be the purr-fect match.

purrs, Sally"

Sally is available today at the Merriam Campus of Great Plains SPCA!

New Year's Day Roll-Call

Ringing in a new year has historically been a time for reflection. So we thought it a fitting time to look back at all the Waifs and Shelter Sweethearts that we've brought to your attention in 2014.

Here are the stats:

41 kitties were featured, including a few very special ones you may recall, like Macy and the sweet kitten with a heart murmur, Drew.

37 of these had a home for the holidays!

Here are the 4 still hoping for that one special someone to walk through the door:

Donald, an amazingly adorable mancat who is FIV+ (but seriously people, that is no big deal, as a recent 5 year study from Maddie's Fund revealed!!)

Chairman Meow, transferred from Great Plains over to Wayside this fall, to help ease Great Plains overcrowded conditions. The Chairman is also FIV+. But seriously, who wouldn't want a big ol' orange kitty to cuddle with?

Beauford, another orange mancat who loves playing with the running water in the bathroom sink! His foster mom says he's a real cuddlebug. Here's hoping 2015 is his year!

And finally, Reddington the Recondite Feline. We can understand why this refined guy might take his time making up his mind on just the right human - and we sure do hope he decides on one soon.

We shared 47 kitty tales with you from Great Plains SPCA in 2014.

Of these, we're so happy to share with  you that 41 of them have found their forever families! They cheered the ball that dropped in Times Square in their own homes.

Here are the 6 kitties who are still waiting for just the right person to walk through that door:

Albony: We knew this sweet - yet very skittish - Siamese girl might be hard to adopt. She needs just the right patient, loving person who is willing to work with her fears. We're crossing our paws that this happens for her very soon.

Kitykins: Our hearts go out to her, for we featured her all the way back in March. We have no idea why this golden girl is having such a difficult time finding her forever home, but we hope it happens soon.

Dooley: This guy just loves kids. He's a recent addition at Great Plains, so we're hoping his one and only human is waiting just around the corner for him.

Sadie: since she's a recent addition to Great Plains, we're hoping it won't be long before she waltzes her way right into someone's heart and home.

Blackie: This rough and tumble guy is still looking for his forever family. We know his ears might not be perfect, but we're hoping that just the right human walks in who can see past to Blackie's big, loving heart.

And then there's the kitty whose soulful eyes went straight to our mom's heart: Alexander. We understand that black cats are considered less adoptable, but it's still with a heavy heart that we share this second black kitty on our list, still looking for his true match.

We hope that 2015 brings about greater understanding about what wonderful companions black cats truly are.

Thank you all
.
Thanks for your patience as we took this journey back through the year.
In all, 78 of the 88 cats featured found their forever homes in 2014.

Thanks for caring about these precious lives.
Most importantly...
Thanks for sharing their stories throughout this past year.

Happy New Year!

Shelter Sweetie: Jake Thomas

"Hey you! Over here! Check it out - I'm the most handsome Tabby boy around this place!"

"Jake Thomas here. Sorry 'bout that - I was just trying to get your attention so you'd come visit with me.

Let me show you what a handsome grey striped Tabby I am. I love it when you scratch my ears. My purr motor will start running and I would just die for a little cuddle in your arms.

I need to be an indoor kitty as the good doctors here have noted that I am FIV positive. That is no big deal, really. It just means I'm a bit immune suppressed, so I like to stay away from all those outdoor cats who might be sporting a kitty cold, you know?

I'll be an excellent companion for you - promise! And if you have other kitties in your house already, noooo prob. Just ask anyone at the shelter about this - I'm a real regular guy when it comes to hanging with others!

Waiting patiently for my forever home,
Jake Thomas"

Jake's available at the Independence campus of Great Plains SPCA!

Wednesday's Waif on Thursday

Today's Waif is well worth waiting for. This one is special - VERY special.

And no one deserves a home more than this guy.

Meet Gary Orson.

"Hello, ladies! And, gents, of course (but, let's be honest, I'm a ladies man). I'm a sophisticated bachelor who loves the simple things in life like fine food, toy mice, and walks through the house.

I'm the George Clooney of cats; I just get better with age. The white specks that appear on my fur are simply reminders of the wisdom of years past. I'm going to level with you here; I'm tired of the bachelor life (don't tell my buddies).

I'm ready to settle down and be in a committed relationship. I want the security of knowing my significant other will always be there for me, tuna in hand, waiting.

While I do want the joys of a committed relationship, I am open to sharing. I've shared my living quarters with other like-minded felines and canines, and feel good about my ability to go with the flow.

I'm a clean fellow - I know where the litter box is, and I know how to use it.

While the younger generation is playing with string and light reflections, I'll be sitting with you while you read poetry at the window - nodding my head and purring in satisfaction.

Have I caught your eye yet? Of course I have....take that pretty little hand of yours and dial this number, 816-986-4426, to set up a date with me.

Flowers and chocolates? Psh, I'll give you purrs and head butting.

Talk to you soon, doll (or....sir).

Yours, Gary"

Oh, and don't be fooled by that lady calling him "Sparks" in the video below - it just took Wayside peeps a bit of time to figure out what his TRUE name was!  ;-)
