BREAKING: Cat and Dog Treat Recall

A recall was announced last night, according to Healing Springs Animal Hospital, of both dog and cat treats suspected of being made in China.

The treats being recalled were discovered to have traces of antibiotics not approved for use in the United States. These treats are marketed under the brand names Breathies, Happy Heart, Happy Hips, Mellow Mut, Shape Up, Veggie Life, Vitality, and Vitakitty. The antibiotics discovered were Sulfaclovine, Tilmicosin, Trimethoprim, Enrofloxacin, and Sulfamethoxazole.

Families can contact Dogswell for a refund at 888-559-8833, Monday - Friday, 8AM to 5PM.

According to Healing Springs, "Apparently, Dogswell LLC has been aware of the potential for illicit antibiotics in these treats since January 2013. In January, the diligence of the NYSDAM led to the recalls in six popular pet treat brands.

"In January 2013, Dogswell, LLC upgraded their internal testing procedures to ensure their foreign sources were not using antibiotics illegal in U.S. food, and the company assures the public that all products with a best by date after January 28, 2015 do not contain illicit antibiotics. Every batch of Dogswell product is tested for melamine, bacteria and other contaminants previously associated with dangerous Chinese imports.
"The company has offered no comment on why they did not use their upgraded procedures to test products already put on the market or why they waited until getting caught by the NYSDAM to issue a recall." (see entire comment by Healingn Springs on their Facebook page link here)

  1. My human just looked and we don't have any of those treats. Aren't companies supposed to name the country their ingredients came from? And if not, there should be a law to make them do it!

  2. Catswell and Dogswell are made in China. I was given a pack of Dogswell last year and as soon as I saw it was from China (in very small print), I gave it back. It's better to invest in a dehydrator and make your own jerky! :)

    1. Oh my CAT, Fisher, are our furry faces red! Mom thought she had found something just released! *face paw* She was investigating the recall announced last evening about the antibiotics and stumbled upon the propelyne glycol recall that just happened to have been announced on this very day last year. She was so stunned to see the July 27 date that she read "2013" instead of "2012." We deleted that part of the post, but the antibiotic recall is valid and was just announced last evening.

Thanks for catching that! We really need to adjust our mom's reading glasses!

  5. We agree. And we're not sure if you caught the post before we edited it, but we found a recall on the FDA's site this morning dated July 27, 2012 - one year ago today - where propylene glycol was found in their Vitakitty treats. Since that substance is very similar to the deadly ethylene glycol (antifreeze), that is troubling.

We see a pattern here, this isn't just a one-off situation. Best to avoid that brand, for sure!

  6. thank Cod I don't like treats! BUt what about all those others who do and who get sick...why does the USA continue to allow imported cat and dog food, any animal feed, to come from China? I know, stoopid question...MONEY!!

  7. Nice detective work by Healing Springs Animal Hospital. That's the most thorough discussion we've seen of this recall.

The head peep was in PetSmart earlier and told them about this recall, even showed them the release on the Dogswell web site, and the PetSmart staffer was skeptical because "We hear about it on the computer before the public." He's got a lot to learn about how fast news travels these days. Retailers can be the last to know. Thanks for spreading the word.

  8. We had some of those treats earlier in the year and took them back with the first recall. We don't plan on buying anymore of them.

  9. I am treat-averse (I never met a treat I liked well enough to actually consume), but the Human knows that there are plenty of potential problems with plain old cat food too. Sigh. Thanks for alerting efurryone to this problem!

  11. I have treats but they are ade here in the US. There is never a chance of getting aything mom suspects comes from there. With them putting melamine in baby formula and poor parents here never suspecting a brand name here in the US was made THERE...I wonder if they are doing it all on purpose, those people? in another country.

  13. Thank you so much about calling this to our attention. We don't have any of these brands in the house, but appreciate the information. When the companies in the U.S. stop using or importing anything from China in the manner of people or pet food, we will all be much better off.
