LATE EDITION Thursday's Purrs: Satin

"So pleased to meet you! My name is Satin.
Thanks for reading about me! My name is perfect for me because I'm covered in soft, satiny black fur. I came to Wayside as a stray. Can you believe someone let a sweet, pretty girl like me get away?"

"I'm a friendly, confident cat who likes to play. But even more than playing, I love to be loved on. The toys captivate me for a while, but then I'm right back to you for more pets and headbutts. At 8 years of age, I'm right in my prime, ready to be a loving, loyal, purrfect companion. "

"When I had my Felineality test here at Wayside, they said I'm a Personal Assistant. That means I'm moderately brave in new situations, and I love nothing more in the world than spending time with my favorite person or people, helping out in any way I can.

You will wonder how you got along without me!

(PSST: Hurry on down! Wayside's still open for another 30 minutes!!)
Love, Satin"

Satin's available today at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.

What do you mean, "it's Fall"?

And what is this 'cold weather coming soon' of which you speak?

Celebrating World Gratitude Day

Every once in a while, tucked between the Banana Festivals and Miniature Golf Days (yeah, they're both "holidays" today, too) ...

You come upon a day that really should be observed.

So today, we'd like to take this opportunity to share with you the things we're grateful for.

Like a safe, warm home (and sunpuddles).

Food to eat, humans who love us. And yes I suppose, even a veterinarian for when we fall ill.

Well, I'm grateful for my vishus claws. (and my snakey)

And for the fact I has all my fangs (unlike somekitties I know).

For those lovely boxes (may they not continue to disappear before we are finished with them).

And for those times I outsmart Mommy and get to go OUTSIDE. (for 5 seconds)

For those times Maxie's not looking and I can snag a catnap in the lounger.
(*ahem* We'll deal with that in a moment, Allie ...)

Most of all, we want you to know how very much it means that you share your time with us.
(With our crazy antics, utter ridiculousness, silly adventures and all.)

Most of all, we're grateful for you.

National Puppy Mill Awareness Day

As today is Puppy Mill Awareness Day, we're reposting an interview from 2011 with Sarah Little, Manager of Admissions and Animal Healthcare at Wayside Waifs in Kansas City.

I asked her about the role animal shelters and rescue resources like Wayside Waifs can play in our fight to eradicate puppy mills in America. Here's what she told me:

"There are so many reasons to become involved with the puppy mill problem. You're helping the animal community but you're also helping the human community. The truth is that some animals are living in horrid conditions because some - not all - breeders either do not have or choose not to use the financial resources necessary to maintain a basic quality of life for these animals.

"In Missouri, there are some decent, licensed breeders but there are also many unlicensed breeders who keep their animals living in terrible conditions. Our goal is to help get the dogs out of there so they can be given the proper nutrition and medical care they need, they can be rehabilitated and given a chance to live a normal life."

Dog in cage, from depositphotos.com
"We've seen some serious issues with the dogs we rescue from puppy mills. The biggest issue by far is dental. The animals are fed such a poor diet that young dogs only a few years old are losing teeth. In some cases the teeth have rotted away and the decay has gone into the jaw bone. In one particular case, the decay was so pronounced, portions of the jaw were eroded completely and the jaw was, in fact, broken in places.

"They have found frequent cases of mammary tumors in dogs who had whelped too many litters, some benign, others tragically malignant. Then there are skin conditions that are easily treated but ignored as extraneous expenses: cherry eye, a common congenital eye defect in various dog breeds easily corrected by surgery, is just one example.

"All I can say is that to be able to give these dogs the medical help they need is more rewarding than words can express."

Many thanks to Sarah for letting us interview her back in 2011, and giving us just a brief glimpse into how rewarding it can be for a local shelter to help carry the torch as we all seek to bring an end to puppy mills in the U.S.

Please...encourage your local shelter to consider implementing a similar program!

Big Whopper Liar Day!

Maxwell: So there I was ...

It was just me and the Red Dot.
Mano a mano.

When suddenly, in a mighty LEAP!  I grabbed that blasted dot and wrestled it to the ground.

"This house isn't big enough for the two of us," I told it.

And so it left.

Yeah, I taught that Red Dot a thing or two, I did.

Are you listening to me, boy? You might learn a thing or two, yanno.

Faraday: Only if I want my nose to grow, Maxie.

Thursday's Purrs: Vera

Every Thursday, beginning this week, we'll be adding another great no-kill shelter into our kitty spotlight schedule: KC Pet Project.

This week, we'd like you to meet Vera.

Vera's photo courtesy Jill Reneé Photography. Used with permission.

According to the staff and volunteers at KC Pet Project, Vera may be the current queen of the Cat Adoption Room! We hear that she can usually be found on top of one of cat trees, looking down on her subjects.

All kidding aside, this is one girl who is just too sweet to be "in charge." She is a free roamer, though - which means that she doesn't have to stay cooped up in a kennel.

That also means you never know where you might find this pretty girl hanging out when you come to visit her in the Adoption Room. And once you meet her, you'll see why: she's a real social kind of gal! Vera loves being around people and she loves the company of other cats.

This lady is gifted with beautiful markings and incredibly soft fur. But be careful - she's kind of addictive. And she's not above begging to be picked up and carried around the room, too (something many otherwise friendly cats might not be too thrilled with!).

Come in and meet this dignified lady and let her work her magic on you.
You'll quickly see what a great addition she would be to your family!

Maxwell Misinterprets National Dot Day

Maxwell: Almost! Alll-l-l-l-most ... there ....
Allie: That's right, Maxie. You keep on reaching for it.
You want to be fully prepared for Dot Day tomorrow, right?

You may even have to skip dinner in order to perfect your form.
No worries, I've got your back.
I'll clean your dinner plate for you, mmm'kay?

I and Love and You - stinky goodness or paws down? #chewyinfluencer review

I'm always interested in trying out a decent cat food that the three will eat, especially on the off chance that today is the day they wake up and decide they have had enough of their current fare.

So when Chewy offered up a sampler box of grain free paté, I said yes, please.

The brand is I and Love and You. And the flavors that came in our sampler were all grain-free paté. This particular form of cat food is almost the only kind our cats will eat. They turn their noses up at shreds and most chunks.

So I was interested in what our herd would think of this brand of paté. As you can see, somekitty decided right away that he was a little bit in love with the box. But what about ingredients, and flavor?

It contained three flavors - two of which I liked. The third, cod, is one I am less thrilled with, because I'm hesitant to feed fish to cats.  Did you know it's one of the top three most common food allergens?

However, they do have a rabbit (not in this sampler, but they do make it - I found when I did a little snooping) which I think is a great protein for cats.

I also like the fact that all their flavors are carrageenan-free. Carrageenan has been suspected as a possible culprit in inflammatory diseases in cats (although not definitively proven, therefore controversial). Since the question has been raised, though -- I avoid whenever possible.

Alhough they are grain free, they aren't vegetable or fruit free, so if you are watching for that - or if your kitty refuses to eat spinach - then this might not be an option for you.

As you can see, however, both boys gave these flavors two thumbs -- err, paws -- way up!

Overall, not a bad choice, especially if culinary tastes suddenly turn. (And as I can't currently mix my own homemade food like somekittys' auntie does!)

We'll definitely keep this brand in mind as an option for the future, and we thank Chewy for allowing us to try a brand we don't currently feed!

Thursday's Purrs: Rizzo

"So pleased to meet you! My name is Rizzo."

"As you can see, I'm a stunning shorthaired black kitty with a spot of white on my throat. I have amazing eyes, don't you think? They can look gold or green, depending on the light."

"I was found as a stray, and recently had kittens. I took care of my babies, and now it's my turn to be somebody's baby. I'm a super sweet, dainty, petite girl who enjoys petting and attention. I will reward you with some velvety headbutts to your hand.

I do tend to be pretty shy at first, but if you speak to me softly and pet me gently, I will warm up quickly. If you're looking for a super sweet, beautiful kitty girl to love, please hurry to Wayside and ask for me, Rizzo!

Love, Rizzo"

Rizzo's available today at Allie's Alma Mater, Wayside Waifs.
