Someone else had to have also thought this phrase existed before the song? Anyone? Bueller?)
Try as we might, we cannot find any evidence that it predated the 1981 release of the song, “Stray Cat Strut” by the UK rock band the Stray Cats.
The song made it to #3 in the US's Billboard Top 100 the year after.
You can hear it today as a track for the music video game “Guitar Hero: On Tour”.
We don't have many stray cats in our neighborhood, but Faraday likes to think he can strut.
How about the cats in your neighborhoods?

No Prada in sight, just girlcats enjoying a little spa time! |

There's a feral colony (at least one) somewhere in our larger neighbourhood (not immediate area). But there are plenty of roaming cats, some with humans, some seemingly without. Our human used to feed one stray or maybe semi-feral; he finally found a farm home last winter and she stopped leaving food out after that (Raccoons and other critters).
ReplyDeleteI can strut! You oughtta see me!
ReplyDeleteWe may be a dwag but we can strut our stuff too. Have a tremendous Thursday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
You are not alone, I too was shocked to learn this was not in the lexicon before the song..
ReplyDeleteAlthough I've never seen any stray cats here, I'm sure there must be. We live in the city so it's got to be a dangerous place for them. : (
ReplyDeleteCan't believe it was the band that came up with that phrase! I would have guessed it to be older too.
Of course now I've got an ear worm and I'm doing my own stray cat strut!
; ) GG

Ohhhhh. Our TNR kitty does the cat strut. We call it the Stinky Cat Strut (because Mommy named him Stinky).
ReplyDeleteAllie, I saw the painting HH did of you - it is awesome!
ReplyDeleteWe saw Allie's portrait over at HH and the Boys earlier today. Even without her toes in the painting, we recognized her immediately. She is such a beauty!
ReplyDeleteMom says that you're always making her put on her thinking cap, which at her age is pretty threadbare. She says she never thought about Stray Cat Strut prior to the song or remembers hearing it. Guess the Stray Cats coined it.
Hope you are going to order Allie's portrait. We ordered Madison's. it arrived today and is purrfect. It looks just like him.
Purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Misty May, Mauricio, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
We certainly remember that song, but laugh too to think this was the way this phrase came into our language! So we say cats strut your stuff!
ReplyDeleteReally! We would have thought that the phrase was in the language earlier. Now we're going to be going back to the 80s with singing that song the rest of the evening!
ReplyDeleteWe have two stray cats who come into our garden and they like to strut but we can out strut them any day!! ;)
ReplyDeletethe critters in the cottage xo
The mom has Stray Cat Strut as her ringtone!
ReplyDeleteFortunately, we don't have many stray cats around us.
My human had not even heard of the song :-/
ReplyDeletePurrs
Wait. She listened to the song and knew it but had not paid attention to the lyrics. Silly human!
